The United States won 1-0 over Iran in a crucial match to move to the knockout round of the 2022 World Cup, and it was tight, nerve-wracking, and heartbreaking at times for American supporters.
Christian Pulisic, who scored in the 38th minute and suffered an injury in the process, provided the biggest moment of his USMNT career in order to progress with just a win. The American player risked injury to advance the United States, taking a knee to the stomach from Iran goalie Alireza Beiranvand in the process.
At halftime, Pulisic was removed, and the United States clung on for dear life the rest of the way as Iran threw numbers forward as the clock wound down.
Even though there were nine extra minutes at the end of regulation time, Iran was unable to score the crucial goal.
With the victory, the United States has the opportunity to compete in the Round of 16, where they will play the Group A champions Netherlands on Saturday. The USA’s minimal objective was to go past the group stage, and with this valiant victory, they have succeeded.

Iran continues to yell for a penalty at the very end, but there is no call, and the referee instead blows the final whistle. The United States progresses to the next round! Iran is eliminated in the meantime.

Chance, Iran, at 90+8 minutes! WOW! The penalty area is chaotic, and the ball squirms through Matt Turner’s legs before being eventually cleared and rolling slowly over the line. Cameron Carter-Vickers appeared to bring Mehdi Taremi down with a hand on his shoulder, and Iran is yelling for him to be given a penalty. However, the VAR check has ended without a review.
90+6: Yunus Musah receives a straightforward yellow card for being pulled back by Abolfazl Jalali after the American midfielder had won the ball and was attempting to make a break. There are at least three more minutes of extra time left.

82nd minute: OUCH! After what seems like an eternity, Matt Turner finally catches the ball after it pops into the air well above the goal mouth. Iran players are claiming there was a handball, but replays disprove this. A player on Iran’s bench receives a yellow card.
80th minute: A very physical battle has broken out in the game. It’s awful to see Josh Sargent leaving the field with tears in his eyes. Walker Zimmerman and Shaq Moore are about to replace Tim Weah and Sergino Dest as more substitutes for the USMNT are being prepared. Gregg Berhalter will aim for a 1-0 victory. This will be the last 15 minutes, which will seem like an hour.

He was only a few inches offside, which is quite close, yet play is waved on, indicating that the technology supported the judgement.
Iran has to make a substitution at 45+3 minutes because left-back Milad Mohammadi must leave the field after visibly pulling something when straining for the ball. Ali Karimi has taken his place.
45th minute: USA, chance! The two-on-two was blown! Tim Weah and Josh Sargent are free with only two defenders after Tyler Adams sprang them, but they are unable to create any room, and Weah’s final ball is intercepted. Iran’s on-the-break defence is outstanding.
Tyler Adams receives a yellow card in the 43rd minute for pushing over Haji Safi to halt a counterattack while his team is still down a man. His first of the competition.

The United States is down to 10 men as the game briefly resumes. Gregg Berhalter must make a crucial choice. The team doctor is assisting Pulisic as he struggles to get behind the goal. Pulisic feels hurt because he can’t celebrate his amazing achievement. He appeared to take a knee from the goalkeeper straight to the middle. It’s unfortunate because this is a pivotal period in the American star’s career.
Christian Pulisic misses the second USA corner of the game in the 37th minute. He has been taking turns inexcusably badly for years. He performed admirably against England, giving reason for optimism, but he is now again dreadful. He drives the ball straight but short of the necessary height, struggling to outmuscle the first man.
33rd minute: USA Chance! Tim Weah misses once more. He shoots the opportunity high despite having a golden chance from the top of the penalty area! He should have made a bigger effort since no one could have stopped him. The United States is applying more pressure, but there is currently nothing to show for it.
In the 31st minute, Nourollahi is impeded by Carter-Vickers so that Turner may collect a through pass while the Iranian midfielder is down and seeking medical attention. Gregg Berhalter is conversing with the fourth official as Iran will undoubtedly waste time throughout the game, as is to be expected.

17th minute: USA chance! Sergino Dest’s brilliant ball into the box to end the U.S. pressure almost finds a mark, but nobody can get there in time to meet it! The ball squirts past Josh Sargent and Christian Pulisic simultaneously.
11th minute: Christian Pulisic connects with a Yunus Musah cross with his head, but his leap was unbalanced, resulting in a feeble effort that was directly at Alireza Beiranvand.
Cameron Carter-Vickers, who was added to the starting lineup for today’s game, is addressed by Tyler Adams. The directive appeared to be for CCV to take a step back and prevent the striker from receiving the ball. Later, he actually does that.

8th minute: Tyler Adams is off to a great start in this game. He is first spotted with the ball out wide left on an offensive possession before racing back and blocking an Iran break. He is very crucial to this American side.
5th minute: The U.S. defence is on edge as Iran has a wonderful possession that enters the penalty area, but many deliveries miss their targets. Iran got the game going with a lot of vigour, followed closely by the United States.
In the second minute, Christian Pulisic gets a great opportunity to score on the break, one-on-one with Josh Sargent in support, but instead of passing to Sargent, he keeps running with the ball and is taken down by Majid Hosseini. Although Pulisic made a fantastic tackle, he needs to pass the ball.
Iran already has a fantastic free-kick on the right side of the field in the first minute, but Tyler Adams heads it away. Early possession is being held by the Asian side.
